Commentary from Lawrence O'Donnell on "The Last Word"
In a very recent edition of MSNBC's "The Last Word" with Lawrence O'Donnell, Mr. O'Donnell suggested that President Obama not place his hand upon the Bible during the inauguration ceremony, which is to take place on Monday. You can play the clip (about 10 minutes long) and listen to his arguments for offering such a suggestion. Overall, I disagree with Mr. O'Donnell's comments. To a seasoned Bible reader, a follower of Jesus Christ, a Spirit-filled Christian, O'Donnell portrays himself as a misinformed, and dare I say, ignorant news commentator. He sees the Bible as nothing more than an archaic book; a text that contains a series of good morals, but at the same time fails to condemn the practice of slavery. (I have heard this argument before, and it should sound familiar to those who are regular viewers of this blog. The same point was made by Dan Savage. If you have not heard him please take a few minutes to search for him on this blog and listen to his presentation.) O'Donnell takes verses out of context, and fails to mention (perhaps because he does not know himself) that the Bible speaks of two covenants, one with Abraham (the Law) and the second covenant through Jesus Christ (grace). There is more, much more to the Bible than condemnations and punishments. The Word of God is living, and it speaks to us today. Others will disagree with me, but I believe this. The Holy Spirit was given to us as a counselor, and it is He who helps us understand the Word, to live a life that reflects Jesus Christ. What are your thoughts concerning O'Donnell's comments? I could write more on this topic, but there are so many facets and I simply do not have the time to cover each and every point. I find it oddly amusing though that the inaugural conference will make an attempt to find a pastor who is more in alignment with the administration than with the Bible, the book that he or she professes to be the Word of God. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
